The Mummy (1999) Movie Review
Thursday Jul 04, 2024
Thursday Jul 04, 2024
They don't make movies like this anymore, that's for sure... a horror infused action/adventure story that works for young adults and beyond. But what is it about this retelling that makes it so beloved? To help us with uncovering the secrets of its success, we are joined by very big fans of this film, Sean and Sarah from the Review It Yourself Podcast.
As we delve into our favourite characters, sequel 'spoilers' and romanticising what could have been for Imhotep, listen out for references on Scooby-Doo, Attack of the Clones, Gremlins - and even Titanic (in which I implore you to go check out our full review on that film to get the full insight!)

The Kid Movie Review
Thursday Jun 27, 2024
Thursday Jun 27, 2024
It's crazy to think that movies have existed for over 100 years... and in this episode, we're covering a film all way back from the 1920's. On top of that, it's also our first outing with Charlie Chaplin. So here is our review of the comedy-drama from the silent era, The Kid.
During our discussion of whether this made us laugh or cry, we also touch upon why this wasn't a Patreon pick, how beneficial 4K is to black and white film, morals of Tom and Jerry cartoons - and is Chaplin in fact the 1920's equivalent of Tommy Wiseau??

Drive Movie Review
Thursday Jun 20, 2024
Thursday Jun 20, 2024
Good guys and bad guys, GTA, Curb Your Enthusiasm - and of course driving - are some of the talking points we have in the following episode...
This movie (much like Alien) has been on the watch pile to discuss for the longest time, but now Sophie is finally getting the chance to watch (and oggle over) Ryan Gosling in the 2011 action thriller Drive. Was her experience of viewing this film a thrill ride, or more like a slow crawl in rush hour traffic? Listen in to find out!

All of Us Strangers Movie Review
Thursday Jun 13, 2024
Thursday Jun 13, 2024
The Patreons helped us pick an LGBTQ movie for us to cover as part of Pride Month, and the winner was All of Us Strangers from 2023, starring Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott. Was the story inviting, or was it isolating?
Alongside talking about the emotional rollercoaster this film brings, we also discuss the right etiquette for crossing legs, religious fears from school, loneliness, and The Power of Love (plus other excellent needle drops).

Alien Movie Review
Thursday Jun 06, 2024
Thursday Jun 06, 2024
In space, no one can hear you scream... but you can certainly hear Sophie's thoughts on watching Ridley Scott's 1979 movie Alien for the first time! Plus we have another person on deck to join in on the discussion - James from the Biscuits and Bluray Podcast (@biscuitsnblurays on IG) - so it's definitely going to be a fantastic mission!
As we delve into what makes this sci-fi slow burn so great, we also touch upon the sequels, the new entry into the Alien franchise for 2024, A Grand Day Out, Radiohead, more horror chat - plus listen out for Paul and Sophie becoming androids in the last 10 minutes of this episode...

Belle Movie Review
Thursday May 16, 2024
Thursday May 16, 2024
We're breaking the cycle with the third installment in our second year of Ani-May, which has us look back at another 2021 anime that Sophie was very happy to be re-watching and reviewing - that being Mamoru Hosoda's Belle (and it might have something to do with the parallels to Beauty and the Beast...)
As we look back over this sci-fi musical, we also take note of the director's other work in similar themes, a jab at the Avengers, Polly Pockets, and the good and the bad sides of online interactions (and what it's done for us!)

The Deer King Movie Review
Thursday May 09, 2024
Thursday May 09, 2024
In our next installment of Ani-May season 2, we take a more seemingly European approach(?) for a Japanese animation, as we both check out The Deer King from 2021 for the first time.
During our discussion you'll hear what has Paul darting over to the blu-ray shelf, whether the movie title should go by another name, what made Paul upset and Sophie annoyed - and obligitary Pokemon references!!

Akira Movie Review
Thursday May 02, 2024
Thursday May 02, 2024
It's round two of 'Ani-May' (still a clever title) and we asked the Patreons to pick one of two cyberpunk-themed heavy hitters. Yes, to Sophie's delight, we're going gritty instead of cutesy from the start with Katsuhiro Otomo's 1988 anime movie Akira.
Despite the despair that occurs in this dytopian 'future', there is still beauty to be found - as Paul tries to point out to Sophie throughout the discussion. On top of that we have more 4K appreciation, anger at animated nudity, and contemplation on whether time would allow Paul to ever delve into the manga series...
